Grand Theft Auto IV based on Edinburgh Football

Grand Theft Auto IVIn a great wee story carried by todays The Scottish Sun, some sad Jambos are moaning that the designers of Grand Theft Auto IV have used the game to have a dig at Heart of Midlothian Football Club.  They claim there are characters based on Hearts players as well as Jambo overlord Vladamir Romanov.

The game features a Russian money lender named Vlad (sound familiar?) who falls out with Roman – an Eastern European, suspected to be based on Roman Bednar the ex-Hearts striker.  Rumours of a bloated, bitter, alcoholic politician named George appearing may be only rumours.

Hearts fans also claim the baddies wear maroon in the game.  Don’t all baddies wear the combination of blood and faeces that makes maroon?  It seems to me the game would be unrealistic if the bad guys were to wear anything else.

The person quoted in the Sun said “The references are really subtle but they are everywhere.  There are too many, it can’t just be a coincidence.”

It’s quite possible too. A good few Hibbies worked on the game for Rockstar North, more than likely loads more than the number of Jambos.  As we know, Hibs fans are more likely to work in cool industries like music, art, game design etc. whereas Jambos have a propensity towards working for the Cooncil or Scottish Widows.

True or not, it’s another great wind up for our paranoid friends from Gorgie.Grand Theft Auto IV

These are obviously good guys, the one on the left even has a new away top.

Hibs v’s Barcelona

May 20th, 2008 6 Comments »

FC BarcelonaIt appears that the mighty Hibernian Football Club will again be playing FC Barcelona.  This time in a pre-season friendly.  I wrote about it here: Hibs pre-season a few days ago but it’s now been appearing in the tabloids.  They give the date as 31st July.  I’m presuming they have some inside info there but you can never really know, they might be going on rumour like me.  There are other rumours of 24th circulating.  The date seems to change but the rumour of Hibs playing Barcelona at Murrayfield seems to be gathering pace.

EDIT: Hibs have now confirmed the game will be on Thursday 24th July 2008, 7.45pm at Murrayfield Stadium

Anyhoo, here’s some info on the last time Hibs played Barcelona…

Hibs v Barcelona, 22nd February 1961

Hibs got through the first round of the European Cup because French team Lausanne Sports scratched. Hibs form in the league had not been particularly great.  The first game was due to be played on 14th December but was cancelled due to fog.

The teams met up in Barcelona on 27th December with Joe Baker scoring twice along with Preston and McLeod to put Hibs 2-4 ahead.  Barca scored two in the closing minutes of the game, making the final score 4-4.  Not bad away from home to Barcelona.

The next leg was played at Easter Road on 22nd February.  Around 50,000 fans packed in to Easter Road that night to witness Joe Baker scoring to put Hibs 1 up within 10 minutes. Barcelona came right back, equalising 10 minutes later through Martinez and going ahead just before half time thanks to a Kocsis goal.

Hibs came out brightly in the second half, putting Barca under pressure whilst shooting down the slope.  The game was becoming more heated and the Barcelona players were becoming more frustrated.  Hibs were denied two penalties by the German referee.

On 75 minutes, Preston managed to equalise from an Ormond corner and Hibs kept piling on the pressure.  Well into the last ten minutes of the game, McLeod was fouled inside the box and the referee this time gave the penalty.  The Barcelona players reacted badly to this, attacking the referee who required protection from Hibs players then the police.

10 minutes later, the situation was under control and the game restarted, Hibs Bobby Kinloch scoring the penalty to put Hibs 3-2 up.

The Barca players again tried to attack the referee who made a run for the tunnel.  He didn’t make it and the result was a shambles of Hibs fans, Barcelona players, police and a referee.

The game somehow started again after a few minutes, I think these days  it would simply have been abandoned.  The two teams played out the final 5 minutes and the ref made a sharp exit, surrounded by Lothian and Borders finest.

Barcelona coach Enrique Onzaola made an apology of sorts to Hibs after the game: “We cannot blame Hibs. The game was clean and sporting until the penalty incident. We will not be taking action against any of our players. When an obvious injustice has been done, it is part of our Spanish temperament to show feeling.”

“Our players went too far, I admit. We have made our apologies to Hibs and to the referee.”

So, final score 3-2 to the Hibees against FC Barcelona.  Not bad, can we do it again?  I doubt we’ll see the same level of excitement this time round but who knows?

Hibs v’s Middlesboro’ and Wigan

May 17th, 2008 4 Comments »

Two pre-season friendlies have been officially announced by Hibs.  English Premiership sides Middlesborough and Wigan Athletic will both be visiting Easter Road in August.  Middlesborough will return on Saturday the 2nd of August, exactly a year on from their last visit when Ross Campbell scored for a 1-0 Hibs vicory.  Hibs play Wigan at Easter Road three days later on Tuesday 5th of August.

Mixu Paatelainen has hinted that there may be an announcement about a “so-called big team” fixture soon…

Hibs pre-season fixtures so far are:

July 5th – Elfsborg or FVB Torshavn (InterToto Cup)

August 2nd – Middlesborough (home 3pm)

August 5th – Wigan (home 7.45pm)

Stabbing outside Rangers UEFA Cup Final Loss.

What a surprise! The incredibly well behaved Huns (according to the Manchester polis after 5 arrests this afternoon) resort to type as soon as they lose.  Apparently a Zenit StPetersburg fan has been stabbed outside the City of Manchester Stadium tonight after Rangers lost the UEFA Cup final 2-0.

Interestingly enough I said that exact thing would happen this evening.  I mean that the Rangers hoards of doom would be bad losers and there would be violence, not that I specifically predicted a stabbing.

Anyway, up them.  Lets hope this is their season falling apart.

Hibees Summer Clearout!

So far Keegan Ayre, Patrick Noubissie, Des McCaffery and Mickael Antoine-Curier have been let go by the Hibees.  It seems likely that a few more will follow. According to the Scotsman, Mixu is looking the squad from 33 to around 25.  That seems an easy enough figure considering some of the less talented players we have around at the moment.

I’d rather see a smaller, though not threadbare, squad of better quality than we have at the moment for next season so I figure he’s doing the right thing here.

Mixu has said he would like to sign 3 more players and is targetting “quality”.  Already, in have come David Van Zanden from StMirren, David Rocastle is on trial for a few days and Fabien Yantorno is training with the squad whilst recovering from his injury with a view to signing once fit.

Personally, I hope that Franck Sauzee’s comments about having a plan for Hibs bear fruit and that he’s ready to bring a few French internationals onto the scene.  We all have our dreams….
