Hearts 0 Hibs 7, Tynecastle
Heart of Midlothian 0 Hibernian 7 – New Years Day 1973
Hibs had recently won the League Cup and hammered Ayr United 8-0. They had disappointingly drawn with Glasgow Celtic in their most recent game and were two points behind Celtic going into the New Year. The Old Firm derby between Rangers and Celtic was postponed leaving Hibs with a chance to go top on goal difference. In those days two points were awarded for a win.
Hibernian needed to win by 6 goals, away from home at Tynecastle Park, home of Edinburgh rivals Hearts in order go top of the league.
Hearts had the first chance of the game but Hibs responded well by scoring 5 times at the Gorgie Road end. Goals by O’Rourke, Gordon, Cropley and two by Duncan gave Hibs a five goal lead at half time. Goals by O’Rourke and Gordon in the second half made the score seven nil.
