Hibs 6 Hearts 2, Easter Road

Hibernian FC 6 Heart of Midlothian FC 2 – October 22, 2000

Hibs started this Edinburgh derby slowly and things weren’t looking good after Hearts’ Andy Kirk scored the first goal.

Mixu Paatelainen put the ball in the back of the net but it was disallowed by the referee, Hugh Dallas, for a push on Steven Pressley. Mixu didn’t let this get him down, putting it past Hearts’ goalkeeper, Anti Niemi, twice within a couple of minutes.

This set Hibs up for a classic second half, with Paatelainen celebrating his hattrick with a spectacular flip, John O’Neil and David Zitelli getting on the score sheet and Russell Latapy, who had controlled the midfield all day, finishing the rout with a spectacular volley past Niemi.

Colin Cameron scored a consolation goal.

The final score was Hibs six, Hearts two but even this fine scoreline does not do justice to the Hibernian performance. Anti Neimi was on fine form, with numerous top class saves but was unable to keep the scoreline anything but embarrassing for Heart of Midlothian.

Mixu Paatelainen became the first Hibs player to score a hattrick in a derby since Pat Quinn in 1967 when Hibs beat Hearts by 4 goals to 1. The future Hibernian manager later described the game as ‘unbelievable’.

The win kept Hibs in second place in the Scottish Premier League (SPL) above Glasgow Rangers. Hibs finished the season in third place.
